Работая в колхозе, учась в школе, не зная точно, где мой отец и за что [он был арестован], я приехал из Сибири воспитанным в духе советского человека. <…> Воспитанный на книгах Островского «Как закалялась сталь», Корчагин, «Тимур и его команда» и так далее, Мересьев, «Повесть о настоящем человеке», как сейчас бы сказали, я был красный или левый <…>. Я с улыбкой об этом говорю, потому что со временем я узнал очень простую вещь: кто в молодости не был леваком, тот никогда не будет настоящим правым…[341]
